The Wildcard Alliance also made a successful $46 million Series A investment announcement that same day. Griffin Gaming Partners, a fund manager, and Paradigm, a venture capital firm with a Web3 emphasis, have also contributed to the investment round.

The Wildcard Alliance team is developing Wildcard, an online multiplayer combat arena, real-time strategy game, and collectible card game hybrid in which players compete in front of real-time, interactive fans and spectators.

The game was created by veteran video game developer Bettner, who is known for designing games like Age of Empires, the early VR success Lucky’s Tale, and the enormously popular Words with Friends. Bettner is now entering the Web3 gaming industry with plans to use blockchain technology to develop a successful game franchise.

As a first-of-its-kind blend of collectible card game, real-time strategy, and multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), Wildcard pits players against each other in front of real-time, interactive spectators.

If you are not familiar with MOBA game, we would love to give you an explanation.

MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) is a game where players vanquish opponents in a fight, using strategy in real time. Each MOBA player only has control over one hero and participates in the team’s general plan.

The online fighting arena is where two opposing teams of 4-5 people meet. You can only control one character per player. Each side aims to protect its own building while destroying the main structure of the other team.

Bettner shared his thought on web3:

“Web3 platforms present a tremendous opportunity to build entertainment that can include, empower, and onboard millions of new players. Despite this opportunity, the current focus of Web3 game development tends to be on finance over fun, economy over engagement, currency over community. With Wildcard, we’re focused on fun first, building a next-generation ‘spectator sport’ to welcome the entire community of competitors, collectors, sponsors, and fans to play together.”

Bettner and his wife Katy Bettner together formed The Wildcard Alliance. In addition to highly sought-after storytellers and IP creators from well-known media brands like Star Wars, DC Comics, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they have put together a team of seasoned game industry professionals with decades of triple-A development expertise.

Dave White, Research Partner at Paradigm commenting on The Wildcard Alliance:

“What sets Wildcard apart is an emphasis on quality and fun. Paul and the team have a proven track record building fun games at the frontier of what’s possible, and they are using Web3 tech in truly innovative ways to bring openness and accessibility to proven eSports mechanisms.”

Wildcard is the first game in a brand-new genre where playing as a fan is just as important to the experience as playing as a competitor. It was created to be a spectator sport. As part of its goal on reducing carbon impact, Wildcard will be constructed on Polygon.
