Amonica brands acquired Notre Game, an Augmented Reality mobile gaming startup

Animoca Brands recently announced that it will own 100% of the issued capital for Notre Game, a game development and publishing company that incorporates physical and digital items into its titles.

What is Notre Game?

Notre Game was founded in 2016 in Prague, the capital city of the Czech Republic. The company’s goal is to look for new approaches to connect the digital and physical worlds in games in the most natural and meaningful way possible. That means taking the best of both worlds! The original approach is based on the great experience of the founding members, both in the development of physical toys and board games, as well as mobile applications and free-to-play games.

The Czech game studio is most known for Scratch Wars, the innovative hybrid physical-digital collectible card mobile game. Despite only being sold in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the sales of the game’s physical scratch cards generated around €2 million in revenue (approximately $2,034,110 USD). Playing with physical or digital cards doesn’t offer an advantage over one over the other; the game is still played the same no matter what. As stated, each card is a scratch card, so all the 100 heroes and 150 weapons are completely unique.

However, one does not need physical cards to start playing; Scratch Wars is completely free-to-play. New players can borrow hero and weapon cards at no cost and earn in-game money to buy their own heroes and weapons simply by playing with the borrowed ones.

Besides that, Scratch Lords, a new digital-only collectible card mobile game with NFT integration and trading, will continue to be developed by Notre Game with the help of Animoca Brands. Scratch Lords will feature a battle arena consisting of a multitude of brave fighter NFTs. Like in Scratch Wars, each fighter card is one-of-a-kind, and no two players will have the exact same one. The game will offer an advanced 2-dimensional card rarity system, and all items, heroes, and weapons will be NFTs with varying rarities. Players must arm and armor them or trade them with other players. You can win matches by participating in leagues or tournaments. Scratch Lords is expected to be available in Q3 2022.

What did the founders say?

Following the acquisition by Animoca Brands, all employees of Notre Game will continue to operate within the company.

Jiří Mikoláš, CEO and game designer of Notre Game, shared his thoughts on the acquisition:

“Thanks to the vision of Animoca Brands, we now have the opportunity to show our ideas to the whole world, marking an important culmination of our game development efforts after years of hard work.”

Yat Siu, co-founder and executive chairman of Animoca Brands, stated:

“We were impressed by the innovation and boldness that Notre Game demonstrated with its physical-virtual hybrid game model. The company has a solid team with strong leadership and the kind of experience and mindset that we are looking for in our mission to contribute to the establishment of the open metaverse.”

Notre Game, as a member of Animoca Brands, will expand its products to the global market and gain access to the considerable networks and resources of the Animoca Brands group. Meanwhile, Animoca Brands has gained another experienced and talented game studio to bolster its vision for the metaverse.

Animoca Brands had previously acquired the racing-focused blockchain gaming startups Grease Monkey Games (which has created Torque Burnout, a car drifting competition game for mobile platforms as well as Torque Drift 1, and the currently in development Torque Drift 2, a drifting tournament racing game on mobile as well as PC) and Eden Games (which has created V-Rally, Test Drive Unlimited, and Gear.Club franchises) in February and April of this year.
